You Don't See that You Don't See (YDSTYDS), is C5's first foray into theater informed by
theory. It premiered at New Langton Arts in San Francisco, California on June 11th, 1999.
Initiated by our interest in artificial intelligence, we chose John Searle's Chinese Room argument
and our continued investigation into autopoiesis, for the subject matter. As these arguments hinge
on determining a system's intelligence from observation, the notion that what you see may not
always be what you get, directed us to the use of deception as the drama's motif. With that in mind,
we wrote a script that entails twists and turns, abruptly changing from the pumped-up drama of a
magician's act as Chinese Room demonstration, through the pedantic headiness of theory discourse,
into the slippery reality of mediated submarine existence, to the elegance of ballroom dancing as
autopoietic co-ontogeny. In the end, YDSTYDS makes commentary on our struggle to understand what we
  observe, to grasp reality. |
